FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ: FAQ

WHO HAS ACUPUNCTURE?

Many people of varying ages come for acupuncture treatment to relieve an array of health issues, such as, aches and pains, musculoskeletal problems, headaches or digestive issues.  Pregnant women can have frequent treatment to support their pregnancy.  Acupuncture is a great tool to induce labour when a mother is at full term in her pregnancy.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREATMENT?

As the treatments are tailor made for each individual, the healing experience can be different for everyone.  Many feel the benefits after one session, others say it can take for up to 3-6 treatments for them to feel the benefit of less pain, an improvement in their digestive issues or a happier disposition.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIRST TREATMENT?

The first treatment will take approximately 1-2 hours, when a full health history will be taken, comprising of questions regarding your sleep, appetite, digestion and emotional issues, so an individual treatment plan can be formulated.  Your main complaint will be discussed and any other issues you're experiencing.

I will take your pulses, and examine your tongue which are specific diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Areas of pain or tension may be palpated.

After the diagnosis has been completed, treatment will start by inserting very fine, single use, sterile needles into specific areas of the body to aid health and well-being.  Some needles may be left in for 15-20 minutes and others may be quickly inserted and removed.

Other Chinese Medicine modalities may be used, such as cupping, Guasha or Moxa.  I will discuss all aspects of treatment with you.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FOLLOW UP TREATMENTS?

Subsequent treatments will take approximately 45-60 minutes, following a quick discussion on how the previous treatment was for you and whether the symptoms have changed, or other symptoms have been uncovered.

Again, treatment will continue by inserting very fine, single use, sterile needles in to specific areas of the body to aid healing and re-balance the body.  Lifetyle advice may be given in order to benefit treatment.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Generally a course of 4-6 treatments on a weekly basis to begin with is suggested for the energy (Qi) in the body to rebalance.  Subsequent treatments will be decided on your progress, how your body responds to treatment and your current symptoms.

Acupuncture is a constitutional treatment and it is normal for other potential symptoms to be uncovered when acupuncture treatment starts.  This is how the body heals itself, like peeling layers of an onion.

Results of treatment cannot be guaranteed, however, the amazing power of acupuncture can be very effective for many people, of all ages.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

It is recommended to wear comfortable, loose clothing to your appointment.

It is advisable to bring a cardigan, jumper or light blanket to your appointment just in case you need to remove items of clothing for treatments purposes.

SHOULD I TELL MY DOCTOR THAT I AM HAVING TREATMENT?

If your are on regular medication or have an acute or chronic condition that you are currently seeking medical advice for, then it is recommended that you inform you Doctor that you are planning on booking an acupuncture appointment.

Your medical and health history will be discussed with me and any medications or supplements that you are currently taking will be discussed. Do not stop taking any medication.

I have been trained to recognise potentially serious underlying health conditions and I can refer you to your Doctor if required.

WHAT DO ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES FEEL LIKE?

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine, and unlike those at the Doctor's surgery.  When inserted, most people don't feel anything at all.  When the energy of the meridian is activated, it is normal to feel a dull ache or tingling.

Treatment should feel relaxing, and many people have an 'acu-nap' or a 'snooze' once needles are in place.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Occasionally some people can feel slightly dizzy or tired after treatment, especially if lying down for 20-25 minutes. It is recommended to eat a small snack before your appointment as this can help.

At times, a small bruise may appear when the needle is removed, this is normal and will dissipate within a few days.

APPOINTMENT TIME

It's important that you turn up at the time of your appointment promptly, as there is no waiting area due to Covid-19.

If you turn up late to an appointment you may not have your full treatment time or may be asked to rebook and a charge may be levied.
